The department encompasses broad disciplines of science and focuses on both agricultural and horticultural crops. Teaching and research in the department addresses improvement of crops for traits starting from seed characteristics to plant architecture and biology to the characteristics of economic produce. The department is well equipped with the tools and facilities required to demonstrate and to impart knowledge and the associated skills to students as well as to undertake research. The department offers optional courses and project work for students interested in the discipline. The department is also favorable towards collaborations with other departments in the college as well as interdisciplinary work among the different specializations within the department. Students are provided the liberty to express their ideas and the promising ones are provided with support to actualize a product/service.
The science of plant breeding is one of the oldest sciences practiced by mankind. Deconstructing the apparent complex plant traits to follow and study its biology forms the crux of this subject. A very spacious lab with all necessary tools and equipment remains the nucleus of teaching and research accompanied by crop cafeteria, demonstration fields and research plots.
The laboratory is involved in demonstrating the characteristics of seeds—the propagules of crop plants. Testing for physical purity, genetic purity and germination are some of the many key knowledge-skill set imparted to students. The lab is well equipped and with the expertise available, can perform the role of a seed testing lab.
The lab is available with the necessary infrastructure for a modern biotechnology laboratory. Demonstrations and training on plant tissue culture is routinely carried out in the lab. The lab is also involved in examining crop diversity in agricultural and horticultural crops and is carried out as a part of students’ project work.
The college campus by itself is one of the vast and well-maintained fields of horticultural tree crops like coconut, mango, gooseberry and guava. Nursery for demonstrating and developing vegetative propagules of horticultural crops is available with net house. The unique placement of the institute, adjoining three districts, Thanjavur, Tiruchirappalli and Pudukkottai has enabled us to leverage on the farmer’s expertise and other institutional support to provide demonstrations, field visits and visit to crop nurseries of horticulture and plantation crops.
